When the Nevada Northern Railway reached the copper camps of eastern Nevada in 1906, promoters created Ely City as a planned commercial & residential district near the depot. Steptoe Valley Inn was built originally in 1907 as a grocery store with rooms upstairs for railroad workers. The building was eventually converted to apartments & a private residence. In 1990 it was remodeled into the Steptoe Valley Inn with romantic rooms filled with lace curtains & hearts. Private balconies overlook the mountains, valley & depot or the fruit & spruce trees, rose garden & gazebo. Rooms are named after the area's pioneers and bear plaques describing their namesakes. The Inn is an oasis in America's "Great Basin Outback." Guests are pampered. A typical day might begin with oven baked Dutch Baby pancakes, sausage, fruit & information about hiking, 4-wheel drive trails, train rides, ghost towns, garnet prospecting & wildlife viewing.
